Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers or Leeb? Choosing the Right Hardness Test Method

Hardness is the most frequently measured mechanical property in industry — and the most frequently mismeasured, because the method was chosen by habit rather than by material and part. Each scale exists for a reason. Here is the practical logic for matching the method to the job.

1. Rockwell: the production workhorse

Rockwell reads hardness directly from indentation depth in seconds — no optics, minimal operator skill. HRC (diamond cone, 150kgf) covers hardened steels; HRB (ball, 100kgf) covers softer metals; superficial scales handle thin parts and case-hardened layers. Choose Rockwell for routine production QC of metals whenever the part is thick and flat enough for the load. Limits: results sit on one small indent, so inhomogeneous materials scatter.

2. Brinell: castings, forgings and coarse structures

Brinell presses a large ball (up to 10mm, 3000kgf) and averages hardness over a big indent — exactly what you want for coarse-grained castings, forgings and weldments where a small indent might land on one phase. It is the standard scale for structural steel plate, cast iron and non-ferrous stock. Limits: slow, needs surface prep and optical reading (or an automatic reading system), and marks the part visibly.

3. Vickers and microhardness: precision, thin layers and everything else

The Vickers diamond pyramid works from grams to 50kgf on one continuous scale, making it the universal referee method. Microhardness (HV0.01-1) profiles case depth, measures coatings, platings, individual phases and brittle materials. Choose Vickers when the specimen is small, thin, coated or when you need CHD/Nht case-depth curves per standard. Limits: surface must be polished; testing is slower and optical.

4. Leeb: portable testing of large parts

Leeb rebound testers go to the part — rolls, large shafts, molds, structures — where the part cannot come to the machine. Accuracy depends on mass, surface prep and correct conversion to HRC/HB, so treat Leeb as a verification tool with known conversion limits, not a substitute for bench testing on critical certification work.

5. Special scales for special materials

Shore durometers for rubber and elastomers; Barcol for GRP and aluminum alloys; Webster for aluminum profiles on the line; pencil hardness for paint films; foam hardness testers for polyurethane products. Using a metal scale on polymers (or vice versa) produces numbers without meaning — match the scale to the material standard your customer cites.
